What a way to start our tenth season at the Hollywood Bowl! Last night’s show headlined by Thievery Corporation sold out and the Bowl was packed by the second act with pockets of happy dancing people everywhere. It was a boiling hot weekend in LA and you could tell people were ready to release some tension with a night of music and dancing.
People were letting loose! Los Amigos Invisibles got the full crowd clapping along. Bebel Gilberto brought her sultry Brazilian singing. As Jason Bentley was introducing Thievery, the guys came up and gave him a tackle hug from behind. It was really sweet and then they launched into a fantastic set, bringing out a bunch of guest singers who gave each song a unique vibe, including Perry Farrell and Seu Jorge.
One of the most recognizable sounds in their music is the sitar and I couldn’t help thinking that their band member has the best sitar-playing job in the world (their bass player also looks very much like the singer from Ghostland Observatory, which happen to be one of Director Peter Berg’s favorite bands).
People were dancing in the aisles -- to the chagrin of security -- but nothing like the time I saw Belle and Sebastian play. That’s another KCRW favorite that sold out the Bowl and their fans don’t mess around – the dancing masses ambushed security and fled into the front boxes, even jumping on stage to dance! I don’t know if I’ll ever see a crowd that beats that one but there are some pretty strong shows coming up this season. Check out the schedule here.

I first met Federico Aubele in a very crowded New York club during LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) in July. The KCRW crew had only been in town for a day or two but I had already heard his name a few times. Raul Campos was a fast fan and Ariana Morgenstern (a fellow Argentine) was kind enough to introduce me to him at the venue. There are a few things that make Federico instantly recognizable and unforgettable – he is very tall, has a wide and genuine smile, and a big head of curly hair. I liked him before I heard a lick, but his music makes him even more likeable. As did his interview with Nic. They talked about his world travels and how he really discovered his native music while he was spending time in Berlin, “you know how your country comes out of you when you’re in a different place?” said Federico.
He left Buenos Aires to travel the world while his native city was in the midst of economic and political turmoil. The influence of all his travels, as well as his yearnings for home, is in his new album, “PANAMERICANA,” on ESL Music – also home to Thievery Cooperation and one of my personal favorite artists, Ursula 1000.
