KCRW is presenting free world music shows on the terrace at Westfield Century City as part of our Sounds Around Town events series. We kick it off TOMORROW, Thursday, September 10 with a performance by Palenke Soultribe, hosted by DJ Raul Campos. The critically-acclaimed, LA-based Colombian band have taken electronic music to new heights by deconstructing Afro-Colombian rhythms and blending them with underground beats and exploratory synthesizer sounds. The event runs from 7 until 9pm and its FREE!
We’ve scheduled a bunch of great musical guests for the next 8 Thursdays. Check out the full schedule HERE

KCRW is the official radio sponsor for the Latin Alternative Music Conference, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! We are one of very few radio stations that play Latin Alternative music so we are thrilled to be a part of it and are sending KCRW DJ Raul Campos to join the festivities. Raul will be MC’ing the event AND broadcasting live from NYC Wed, July 8 through Fri, July 10, with special guests.
We created a web page to spotlight Morning Becomes Eclectic performances by some of the artists performing at this year’s conference: http://www.kcrw.com/lamc
There is also a great slideshow with photos from years past.
Check it out and stay tuned for more.

As the co-founder and president of MySpace, Tom Anderson has millions of bands among his “friends” on the popular social networking site. What we didn’t know, however, is that Tom himself is a musician! He decided on three themes for his Guest DJ set: pop music, technology and something “that KCRW would never play.”
Tom tells DJ Raul Campos about how Green Day inspired him to keep his gear when he was a frustrated musician attending UC Berkeley, how Guitar Hero has increased his appreciation of My Chemical Romance, and his love of mainstream pop – from the Beatles to Kelly Clarkson. He also chose a song by Meiko, who got heavy KCRW airplay before joining the MySpace Records roster. Check it out HERE.

The last two nights of the CMJ Artist Lounge were all over the map -- from the psychedelic reggae and soul of DRI to the Aussie pop of the Boat People and my favorite cover of the festival - Portastatic's version of "Dancing in the Dark." During the day, I saw one of my favorite sets courtesy of the Miniature Tigers. I was looking forward to seeing this AZ-based band going in and they did not disappoint.
Delta Spirit closed out the showcase (and their 2-month tour) with rollicking rock. I had a long chat with singer Matt before the show about his love of old soul and how much he enjoyed raiding the Rounder Records vault when he got signed to the label.
After a full week of music, I ended my trip the way you should in New York - I grabbed a bagel and lox from a local deli on my way to the airport.

After an early morning visit to the CMJ Artist Lounge where we got Theresa Anderson dancing in the stairwell (and saw some interesting remnants of the night before - watch the video), I headed out to catch some music. I walked in at the end of Shugo Tokumaru's set. He's one of the CMJ "buzz" artists and, according to Wall Street Journal writer Jim Fusilli, it's totally justified. Jim think he may be the most impressive artist he sees at CMJ and it is only day 2!
We ran into Women (who are all men) and grabbed them for a quick chat. This is their first time playing NYC and they said they were surprised by the turnout. They were probably being modest because they also have a lot of buzz and will be playing our showcase tonight, as will Takka Takka. Nic really likes these guys and I'm really excited to see them live.
Project Jenny, Project Jan is a one MC/one DJ band but it was just what I was looking for in the late afternoon - dance music with excellent showmanship and beats.
Off to see more music...

I rushed across a huge polo field at Golden Gate park in hopes of catching a few songs from Cold War Kids but it was all in vain - this place is HUGE! I still haven't even seen the stage where they were playing. Outside Lands has solar powered cell phone chargers, lots of vegan food, and really fantastic performance video from the main stages but what I wouldn't give for a hat, scarf and gloves. It's chilly! But jumping up and down to Manu Chao with thousands of other fans warmed me up. He was spectacular and the crowd was going wild for him - the band even had some great synchronized moves! It was a blast. Now...looking forward to Radiohead. RR

When the City of Santa Monica called us a month ago to tell us about an all-night art event they were planning and asked if we would participate, we were IN. I mean, we love free events that we can invite our listeners to. Little did we know that the event they expected 15,000 people to attend would draw closer to 100,000.
The crowd was as diverse as any I’ve ever seen and I think that may be the biggest success of the night. Unfortunately, having that many people in one place also had its problems. When Garth Trinidad kicked off his DJ set at 10pm, there was already a group of dancing folks pressed up against the barricade. By the time his set ended at midnight, there were bodies as far as I could see (from behind the DJ booth) and people partying it up in the sand below. (some camped out in the middle of our logo, see photo by Beth Topping).
Raul Campos took over after midnight with an old-school house set and the crowd was really digging it. Sadly, the cops pulled the plug a little after 1am, much to our dismay. (as Raul said, you know it’s a good party when the cops have to shut it down. He was having a blast.) We knew the crowd was full of listeners who heard about GLOW through us and we hated the idea of letting people down. Jeremy Sole’s records never even got to touch the turntables.
The good news is one word – possibility. Los Angeles has a lot of public space (particularly, Santa Monica has a lot of sand) that is not utilized for events like this. I love that tons of people came to Santa Monica from across Los Angeles for an art/music event. I think there are ideas for the future floating around in a lot of people’s heads.
Thanks sincerely to everyone who came out. (more photos below)

p.s. Did anyone actually see the grunion run?
GLOW is a FREE, all-night event taking over the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, July 19 from 7pm to 7am. From the sand to the sea up to the Pier and Palisades Park, there will be 20 multi-media art installations, music by KCRW DJs and much more.
GLOW is the ONLY event to have ever received permission to use the historic Santa Monica Pier and beach as an all-night venue – this is an INCREDIBLE event and you won’t want to miss it. DJs Garth Trinidad, Raul Campos, and Jeremy Sole will provide the soundtrack on the Pier from 10pm to 4am.
Internationally-recognized artists will create engaging sights and sounds from dusk till dawn. The solar-powered Ferris Wheel will host a revolving orchestra, “tumbleweeds” of recycled material will float on the ocean illuminated by LEDs, SASSAS with dublab will take over the carousel to present Tonalism, an ambient sound and projected image environment, and Shih Chieh Huang will turn the path under the Pier into Neptune’s Net.
Details on ALL the art projects can be found at www.glowsantamonica.com. See you there!

Last weekend, we had a few guests come through the KCRW studios...
Check out a conversation and guest DJ set with Gary Calamar and Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields). Stephin talked about his move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles (he says his dog, Irving Berlin, loves it here as he can pee on the grass instead of concrete) and brought a wide variety of obscure international 60's nuggets to play for us. The highlight for Gary was "I Enjoy Being A Girl" by The Banana Splits.
Also, the legendary Roy Ayers joined Raul Campos to play brand new music from his forthcoming album and talk about his past, present and future.
