K’Naan has once of the most interesting stories I’ve
heard in a long time. He’s originally from Somalia and comes from a family of poets and singers. Poetry is so valued
in Somalia
– and his grandfather was so influential – that they lowered the
flag of the country for three days when he passed in away. K’Naan is a
thoughtful rapper whose music is rooted in traditional African melodies and
classic hip-hop tradition. He tells Jason that he breaks down his life in terms
of times of peace and times of war and has tried to transform the pain of tough
times into things people sing about. With an invitation from the Marley family,
he recorded his album in Kingston,
with various appearances from members of Bob’s musical and personal life
stopping in throughout the process. “Wavin’ Flag” is the
culmination of all his many talents in one song.

Elbow are considered “elder statesmen” of the UK indie music scene but their music sounds as vital as ever, particularly “One Day Like This” off their most recent album “The Seldom Seen Kid.” A couple violin players joined them in the studio this morning, adding a perfect layer of strings. Another notable performance was a stunning rendition of “Scattered Black & White,” an old favorite among longtime fans. What I loved most about this set is that even though they have these epic, heartfelt, emotionally bare ballads, they aren’t afraid to chat and laugh between them. In fact, frontman Guy Garvey told a bunch of great stories between songs, one of them explaining why he talks so much. It was hilarious and I don’t want to give it away in the blog so listen/watch for yourself

Today’s episode of Tuned In showcases songs from Neva Dinova (“Supercomputer” from YOU MAY ALREADY BE DREAMING), Ida (“Road to Ruin” from MY FAIR, MY DARK), and Thom Yorke’s brother Andy Yorke (“Rise and Fall” from SIMPLE). Nic also features Tilly and the Wall with an in-studio cover of Erasure’s “Respect” and some really fancy tap dancing by Jamie Pressnall, the percussionist for the band. GLOW is a FREE, all-night event taking over the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, July 19 from 7pm to 7am. From the sand to the sea up to the Pier and Palisades Park, there will be 20 multi-media art installations, music by KCRW DJs and much more.
GLOW is the ONLY event to have ever received permission to use the historic Santa Monica Pier and beach as an all-night venue – this is an INCREDIBLE event and you won’t want to miss it. DJs Garth Trinidad, Raul Campos, and Jeremy Sole will provide the soundtrack on the Pier from 10pm to 4am.
Internationally-recognized artists will create engaging sights and sounds from dusk till dawn. The solar-powered Ferris Wheel will host a revolving orchestra, “tumbleweeds” of recycled material will float on the ocean illuminated by LEDs, SASSAS with dublab will take over the carousel to present Tonalism, an ambient sound and projected image environment, and Shih Chieh Huang will turn the path under the Pier into Neptune’s Net.
Details on ALL the art projects can be found at www.glowsantamonica.com. See you there!
