I saw Blind Pilot play live at Molly Malones last year and it was one of those rare moments where you could literally hear a pin drop in the room. A silence of reverential awe. The only other time I’ve seen it recently is for the Fleet Foxes and it makes sense. Both bands have a strong folk influence but it’s the songwriting that makes these songs kick. And for Blind Pilot, an interesting combination of instrumentation -- upright bass, banjo, ukulele, trumpet and vibes -- in addition to drums and guitar/vocals by the band’s founders Ryan Dobrowski and Israel Nebeker, respectively. At the time, the band was touring the West Coast via bicycle, trailing their instruments behind them. They really seemed to relish the experience, and that appreciation for life and the observation of things around them is what makes their music so rich. Their record “Three Rounds and a Sound” (which was on my Top 10 list of 2008) is now being released by ATO.
Check out this fantastic set of music here
(and big thanks to Chris Douridas for being an early
supporter of the band here at the station and bringing them to my attention!)
Blind Pilot did an impromptu performance for us right outside the KCRW studios last year as part of our CMJ preview.
