Kelly Slater is the most successful professional surfer in history, with eight world titles and a record number of pro tour victories, but he has a big passion for music as well, both as a listener and a player. He tells DJ Liza Richardson about five songs that have inspired him in this Guest DJ set, including fellow surfers Jack Johnson and Eddie Vedder.

A funny thing about Kelly -- he was an hour late to the taping. Normally I wouldn't call someone out for their tardiness BUT I got a copy of his new book (Kelly Slater: For the Love) and multiple people, including his co-writer, mention that he is famous for always being late. They also make sure to say it's not because he doesn't value other people's time, he's just the type of guy to get stuck in a conversation and not cut it short out of respect for the person he's talking to. An interesting factoid about this world-renowned athlete! (and, for the record, I think he could have talked to Liza about music for hours, given the opportunity)

The Guest DJ Project invites actors, authors, chefs, athletes, directors, tech entrepreneurs and others to share their musical passions with a KCRW DJ. Guests are asked to choose five songs that have inspired them throughout their life – a herculean task for any music lover. However, our gracious guests have explored the soundtrack to their lives and opened their hearts to share confessional tales about their youth, the ups and downs of their careers, and more. All is revealed through their song choices.
