Today was a day of firsts – Jason Bentley hosted his first live guest on Morning Becomes Eclectic and it happened to be Oren Lavie’s U.S. radio debut! Oren tells Jason that he “couldn’t get arrested in Berlin,” where he was living when he found out a group of DJs were playing him on a station in California.
Former Music Director and current KCRW DJ Chris Douridas fell in love with Oren’s album and passed it along to other DJs during various hallway run ins (our unofficial meeting space here in the basement at KCRW). Oren is a true citizen of the world – he calls Israel, where he grew up, his home but has also lived in London, New York and Germany. When Jason noted his music has a “dream like quality,” Oren replied that “daydreaming is the most important thing you can do as a writer” and proceeded to read the first chapter from a children’s book he is writing.

One of Los Angeles’
most promising local bands made their debut on MBE today. With an Eastside residency
and a steady slate of live shows (including a sold out gig at the El Rey this
Thursday), Airborne has quickly built a strong fanbase for their anthemic rock.
They took it to the next level on MBE this morning, when the Calder Quartet
(viola, two violinists, cello) joined them for their second set, especially on
their hit “Sometime Around Midnight.” Mikel Jollet’s lush voice is an obvious strong
point but the whole band is solid and far from trendy. They are the real deal.

Earlimart will be on MBE tomorrow (WED) to celebrate the new release of their CD “Hymn and Her.” Local artists Aaron Espinoza & Ariana Murray went straight into the studio after a grueling tour for their last disc, the critically-acclaimedMentor Tormentor. Tune in and check out the new songs.
Real Tuesday Weld will close out the week with a live set. The UK band is coming through town for an appearance at LA’s Grand Performances downtown, which Nic Harcourt will be hosting on July 18 at 8pm. It’s a free event.
The band calls their style “antique beat” – melding jazz, pop, film score sounds, and electronica into an impressive sonic mix.

I spent my birthday with Little Jackie. I fell in love with their CD of soulful summer songs while I was on vacation and when I found out their LA debut was on my birthday, I invited 20 of my closest friends to come to the show. They were all floored. Little Jackie is the brainchild of Imani Coppola and Adam Pallin. They are pretty much Brooklyn’s answer to Amy Winehouse and one of my favorite songs on the record, “Crying for the Queen,” is pretty much directed straight at her. The lyrics – on all the songs -- are gutsy, honest and extremely personal. The music is danceable and fun.
KCRW is headed to New York next week and if you live in the city, please come join us for a KCRW.com Presents Showcase at the Knitting Factory that will feature Little Jackie, along with Tally Hall and Salt & Samovar on WEDNESDAY, July 9. I will be there with Nic and Ariana Morgenstern. It’s going to be a night to remember!
Oh, and check out the set in case you missed it live!

Nic and Tift Merritt were talking like old friends during her set last week. They were catching up about her move to New York (into a “shoebox”) and her constant touring (in an even smaller van). Aside from the small quarters, she says she’s enjoying both.
Tift has been making beautiful music with an alt-country bent for years and for her latest record, “Another Country,” she settled into a Paris apartment with a piano to write. You won’t necessarily hear a Parisian influence, but the trials of living in a city with a foreign language definitely had an impact -- communication and “saying what you mean” are themes in songs like “Something to Me.”
“Broken” is one of her best songs yet and this performance is fantastic.
