Last time Inara George was here she was accompanied by Van Dyke Parks, a guest on her new album of solo material. Last time Greg Kurstin was here, well, he was only here in spirit – as the co-writer and producer of most of the songs off Lily Allen’s new album. Today, they were here together as the Bird and the Bee and joined by some notable singers from the LA scene – Juliette Commagere and Obi Best’s Alex Lilly.
They played tracks off their new album, “Ray Guns are Not Just the Future, including a tribute to David Lee Roth and “Love Letter to Japan.” They finished the session with a cover of Hall and Oates’ “Sara Smile” – CLASSIC.

The last time I saw Juliette Commagere, she was on stage at the Viper Room with a platinum blond mohawk playing a keytar (a keyboard played like a guitar) with her indie rock band Hello Stranger. I was a little overwhelmed by how much “look” they had going on, but I liked the music a lot – and she certainly commanded my attention. It was the limited success of that band, after years of almost making it, that plunged her into a depression when they returned from a tour. But it also inspired her to record a solo album that caught Jason’s attention.
She made her MBE debut today with a big band behind her – strings, horns, back up singers – playing tracks off “Queens Die Proudly,” available on Aeronaut Records.
