KCRW’s free music series ends tonight with a performance by LA’s own Fool’s Gold, who recently made a splash at the CMJ Music Conference in New York. The local musical collective weaves together Western pop aesthetics with African melodies and beats and Hebrew lyrics. The band will make their Morning Becomes Eclectic debut TODAY at 11:15 am and perform tonight at Westfield Century City under the stars. Bundle up and come out for a DJ set by Jeremy Sole at 7pm followed by the live set. More details here.

I know everyone is probably fully focused on their Labor Day plans but you should DEFINITELY mark your calendar for next Saturday, September 12.
KCRW will be hosting a FREE outdoor dance party with DJ sets by KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley and KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole, as well as a rare live performance by Sole’s all-star ensemble of musicians that he calls “Musaics.” It will take place at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626) from 9pm to 11:30pm. It’s open to the public and I guarantee it will be an amazing night of music and dancing.
Sole will open the night at 9pm with a DJ set before inviting a dream team of local musicians (members have performed with TV on the Radio, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Mos Def, Raphael Saadiq, Build An Ark and more) to the stage for a live band performance as Musaics. Sampling drum loops from vintage world music records and layering original compositions, Jeremy’s live project juxtaposes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Highlife, Jazz, Dub and experimental beats. Jason Bentley will close out the evening, ending at 11:30pm.

This free outdoor dance party is open to the public and will take place in the Center’s Community Plaza. (p.s.: for those in OC, Jeremy just launched his first monthly club residency in the area, Branches, at the Continental Room in Fullerton last night. It’s free and it will be on the 3rd Tuesday of every month!)

KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole hosted KCRW’s 8th Reggae Night at the Hollywood Bowl, kicking off an evening of stellar performances from Toots and the Maytals and Michael Rose (sadly, Gregory Isaacs canceled last minute due to illness). I asked him to set the scene and tell me about the experience:
“As they led me to my room backstage, I noticed the black and white photos that line the hallway - Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix and other legends that have graced the stage of the historic Hollywood Bowl. The depth of the moment began to set in. Now, I have seen a lot of green rooms, introduced and deejayed for many of my living idols - and your better believe hosting a night with Black Uhuru's Michael Rose and the one and only Toots & The Maytals would definitely be one of them. But what was unprecedented in my world was hosting a sold out show of 18,000 people, under a perfect August sky in Los Angeles. The energy was electric, and the honor I felt was majestic.
If you had asked me when I moved to LA, if I could picture myself on the stage of the Hollywood Bowl, I'm not going to lie - the answer would be yes. Yet still, when the moment came and I was cued to take the mic, all the warmth flooded inward; the joy of sharing music for a living, the inspiring family that I have inherited at KCRW, and the present moment of personal grandeur all compounded on inhalation. And let me tell you the exhale was even sweeter. I stepped to the mic and did what I do, and the rest of the night, as they say, is history - at least personally."
You can hear Jeremy on Wednesday nights from midnight to 3am

KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole is a big fan of Clutchy Hopkins and got a sweet surprise when the artist called him up last week to say he was recording a piece just for him, a tribute to the great Brazilian arranger/composer Arthur Verocai. Jeremy got it too late to play it on air, but this week he played the new track and previous exclusives the artist has recorded just for him.
Luckily, you don’t need to stay up after the midnight hours to hear all the good stuff that goes down during Jeremy’s show since each one is archived and available on demand until the next one airs HERE. (click on “recent shows”)
Skip ahead to about 2:30am to hear the Clutchy Hopkins tracks and other fantastic selections.

On Monday, as part of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day of Service, KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox, along with fellow DJ Jeremy Sole, participated in an L.A. Works Project. They volunteered their time to help beautify the Loren Miller Elementary School in South Los Angeles. Volunteers participated in activities ranging from painting walls to planting trees. Dan was fortunate enough to be involved in painting a giant map of the US on the playground, as you can see in the photos!
Kids from the school then led a march and recited excerpts from MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech. As Dan points out, this proves that KCRW DJs aren't simply music nerds who don't get outside much!

I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of watching TV. But there are certain shows I can’t resist and Project Runway is one of them. I loved watching Rami Kashou create beautiful dresses that would make any woman feel like a queen and when I heard that our own Jeremy Sole helped create the music for Rami’s runway show during the finals, I was so excited about the possibility of finding out the music that drives his work. I was not disappointed. Not only was he very sweet, he’s a passionate music lover with truly diverse tastes.

When I first heard that Temple Bar was closing, my stomach dropped. It was one of just a few venues on the Westside and the very first place I saw music when I moved to Los Angeles 8 years ago. What I always loved is that I could go in on any random night and there would be an exceptional band playing. It was a destination for acts from all over the world and I never left there without breaking a sweat from dancing. With incense burning and breathtaking gigantic paintings adorning the red walls, it was an inviting and warm place to host -- as LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said in a proclamation read last night -- “music with consciousness.”
When I walked in last night there was a bit of sadness but a LOT of celebrating and KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez was on the decks getting the dance party going (DJ Jeremy Sole would drop by later in the evening) and prepping the crowd for an all-star jam session unlike anything I have ever seen. From singer Chris Pierce (a KCRW fave) and Kim Hill (formerly of Black Eyed Peas) to jazz singer Dwight Trible, beatboxer Josh Silverstein, and poet/spoken word artist Sonja Marie. All improvised tributes to the venue, passing off the mic to other performers. It was simply magical.
As owners Louie and Netty Ryan said last night, Temple Bar is a lifestyle. They achieved diversity through music and impacted a wide range of artists and fans in the process. KCRW is proud to have presented many shows and artists at the venue. I’ve seen some unbelievable sets -- from a secret Nikka Costa show to Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, a band so big they took up half the dance floor! It’s where I first saw The 88 and so many, many more.

Our music library assistant Nassir took some photos:
When the City of Santa Monica called us a month ago to tell us about an all-night art event they were planning and asked if we would participate, we were IN. I mean, we love free events that we can invite our listeners to. Little did we know that the event they expected 15,000 people to attend would draw closer to 100,000.
The crowd was as diverse as any I’ve ever seen and I think that may be the biggest success of the night. Unfortunately, having that many people in one place also had its problems. When Garth Trinidad kicked off his DJ set at 10pm, there was already a group of dancing folks pressed up against the barricade. By the time his set ended at midnight, there were bodies as far as I could see (from behind the DJ booth) and people partying it up in the sand below. (some camped out in the middle of our logo, see photo by Beth Topping).
Raul Campos took over after midnight with an old-school house set and the crowd was really digging it. Sadly, the cops pulled the plug a little after 1am, much to our dismay. (as Raul said, you know it’s a good party when the cops have to shut it down. He was having a blast.) We knew the crowd was full of listeners who heard about GLOW through us and we hated the idea of letting people down. Jeremy Sole’s records never even got to touch the turntables.
The good news is one word – possibility. Los Angeles has a lot of public space (particularly, Santa Monica has a lot of sand) that is not utilized for events like this. I love that tons of people came to Santa Monica from across Los Angeles for an art/music event. I think there are ideas for the future floating around in a lot of people’s heads.
Thanks sincerely to everyone who came out. (more photos below)
