Port O’Brien was one of six bands we chose to showcase at this year’s SXSW Music Conference for our official night event. They handed out pots and pans to the audience and created a warm vibe to go along with their loose folky pop, which was at times simple and other times experimental. The roots behind their music are incredibly interesting and unique. Signer Van Pierszalowski spent years working in Alaskan canneries for short stints that would allow him to earn a good chuck of money, get some inspiration, and then focus on his music for the rest of the year. He founded the band with Cambria Goodwin, from the city of the same name, and the started filling out the line up before touring with everyone from Bright Eyes to Modest Mouse. The band dropped in to play some songs from the new album and, despite a broken bass string, gave us an inspired set of music.

Now that the news has broken about Daft Punk’s involvement in the Tron Legacy movie, I can spill the beans as well. Our own Music Director Jason Bentley has been working as the music supervisor on the film for over a year and was responsible for bringing Daft Punk on board. He even helped put their helmets on for a cameo appearance in the movie! Daft Punk is not only scoring the film but will be touring in support of the soundtrack.
Jason can’t share much more for now but stay tuned as the movie release gets closer.

KCRW DJ Marion Hodges fills in as the Music News Guest Blogger
Solo artist/Raconteur Brendan Benson stopped by the KCRW studio this morning. While there, he treated us to nearly 45 minutes of his thoroughly endearing brand of upbeat, and heartfelt power pop. Benson also chatted with Jason Bentley about the future of the Raconteurs, the thrills of do it yourself recording, and how falling in love with hardcore records at an early age opened his eyes to the fact that it was possible for someone like him to write and record songs. He also revealed the title of the first song that he ever wrote. While (sadly) our host's request to hear this song went unfulfilled, the songs that we did hear certainly did their part to satisfy some serious pop cravings.

I know everyone is probably fully focused on their Labor Day plans but you should DEFINITELY mark your calendar for next Saturday, September 12.
KCRW will be hosting a FREE outdoor dance party with DJ sets by KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley and KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole, as well as a rare live performance by Sole’s all-star ensemble of musicians that he calls “Musaics.” It will take place at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626) from 9pm to 11:30pm. It’s open to the public and I guarantee it will be an amazing night of music and dancing.
Sole will open the night at 9pm with a DJ set before inviting a dream team of local musicians (members have performed with TV on the Radio, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Mos Def, Raphael Saadiq, Build An Ark and more) to the stage for a live band performance as Musaics. Sampling drum loops from vintage world music records and layering original compositions, Jeremy’s live project juxtaposes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Highlife, Jazz, Dub and experimental beats. Jason Bentley will close out the evening, ending at 11:30pm.

Dengue Fever is a local band with an international sound -- Cambodian psychedelic surf rock being the most common description of their music. They band recently made their Hollywood Bowl debut as part of KCRW’s World Festival and are touring in support of some new tunes and a film documenting their 2005 tour of major Cambodian cities, called “Sleepwakling Through the Mekong.”
The band played a very special set for us, including some debuts. “Uku” is a brand new song that have never been played before and “Genjer Genjer”has never been played live, only released on 7.” “Kiss Goodbye” has only been played live once and has never been recorded. If you missed the set, you can check out all the new tunes HERE!

K’Naan has once of the most interesting stories I’ve
heard in a long time. He’s originally from Somalia and comes from a family of poets and singers. Poetry is so valued
in Somalia
– and his grandfather was so influential – that they lowered the
flag of the country for three days when he passed in away. K’Naan is a
thoughtful rapper whose music is rooted in traditional African melodies and
classic hip-hop tradition. He tells Jason that he breaks down his life in terms
of times of peace and times of war and has tried to transform the pain of tough
times into things people sing about. With an invitation from the Marley family,
he recorded his album in Kingston,
with various appearances from members of Bob’s musical and personal life
stopping in throughout the process. “Wavin’ Flag” is the
culmination of all his many talents in one song.
