KCRW’s World Festival show THIS Sunday, July 26 features Grace Jones and Dengue Fever in there Hollywood Bowl debuts. Also, LA’s own Dengue Fever opens the show.
This is Grace’s first Los Angeles appearance in over 20 years! The Hollywood Bowl performance will include the natural combination of music, theatrics and fashion that define a Grace Jones concert. Also, word from Of Montreal's camp is that they are pulling out all the stops for an elaborate stage production for this special occasion. The KCRW favorites are known for their unpredictable shows so we can’t wait to see what happens.

We are kicking off KCRW’s World Festival at the Hollywood Bowl this Sunday with a show featuring Afrobeat superstar Femi Kuti, breakout star Santigold and the soulful sounds of Raphael Saadiq. It’s an incredible lineup and the show starts at 7pm, with KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad as host.

Another great night at KCRW’s World Festival. Garth Trinidad hosted the evening, which had headliners Gnarls Barkley covering Radiohead as well as performing their hit “Crazy” (perhaps a bit reluctantly…read the LA Weekly blog for more on that, as well as great photos by Timothy Norris) and tracks off the new album like “Run.” Cee-Lo cussed within seconds of taking the stage which makes me realize it was probably pretty hard for him to censor himself during their live set on MBE, but he did do it! Cee-Lo is so much fun to watch – he’s charming and funny and his voice never fails to amaze me.
I’ve heard a lot about Deerhoof but I’ve never seen them play, so this was a treat. The second I walked in, they blew me away. The bowl is not an easy place for a rock band to play but their energy and ferocity got everyone’s attention. Fallou Dieng was exciting to watch. Incredible percussion and really wild dancing. I don’t have the words to explain it but it was definitely interesting to watch!
Just a couple more shows left – next week is Reggae Night!

Gnarls Barkley will be dropping by for a live set on Morning Becomes Eclectic before their Hollywood Bowl debut on Sunday. Garth Trinidad will host the show, which is part of KCRW's World Festival. Senegalese artist Fallou Dieng and experimental rockers Deerhoof are also on the bill.
More MBE Guests: The Black Kids will be here on Monday. Nic has been spinning songs off their EP since the CMJ conference last year. They also have one of the longest song titles I have ever seen in our playlists – “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Girlfriend How to Dance With You.”
Also, the Virgins perform a set on Wednesday. Their CD is one of my fave high-energy discs of the summer. They are excellent live so I am really looking forward to the show.

Sunday’s salute to “women in rock” at the bowl was dominated by the powerhouse that is Sharon Jones. Her cover of James Brown’s “"It's a Man's Man's Man's World" brought the house down. It was the highlight of my night, although her dance moves (with and without heels) were a close second.
As far as visual imagery goes, Feist has some of the most interesting artistic backdrops I have ever seen. They were being created real time by two women, a projector, and an array of finger paint and props. My eyes were glued to that screen for a good part of the night. It was magical and something I have never seen before. One thing I learned about Feist is that she is an excellent guitar player. Watching her rock out on guitar during “1,2,3,4” made me proud to be a woman. “I Feel it All” is my personal fave and I loved sharing that moment with thousands of other people. That song just makes me happy.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Sharon Jones’ band the Dap Kings, you might have heard their soulful funk on a little album called “Back to Black” by an artist named Amy Winehouse. If you’re a soul fan, you HAVE to check out artists on Daptone Records. Everything they put out is full of heart and soul and played by incredible musicians – I’m a big fan of Budos Band and The Sugarman 3, myself.

Latin-tinged doo wop and bee bop Samba filled the Hollywood Bowl last night thanks to Devendra Banhart and Gilberto Gill. Devendra gave host Anne Litt just one simple message for the audience "fun and mellow." I've never seen this "freak folk" artist play live before and later in his set, he really got going and the audience ate it up - his quivering vocals, hip shaking dance moves, and face paint.
(On a side note - he murmured a "happy birthday Laura" right at the beginning of the set. I found out today the "Laura" was our very own Laura Shumate. She runs our pledge drive and is a huge fan…somehow word got back to him.)
Gilberto Gil had the ease of a legend but the energy and excitement of someone hitting the stage for the first time. There were lots of Brazilians in attendance to see their hero and I even had a chat with one girl who said she was thrilled to see songs she's known since she was a child sung at the Hollywood Bowl. He delved into the history of the Samba - with short explanations and varied song choices - and even played a little Bob Marley. Hearing a crowd of thousands sing "everything is gonna be alright" really does make you feel that way.
He called for Devendra (who is half Venezuelan, btw) to join him for the encore…shouting "Devendra, where are you!" after he failed to appear. Luckily, the artist made it out just in time to join the final jam that had the whole place on their feet. Another great night at the Bowl…next show is on July 20 and Feist is headlining.
