Now we know summer is really here!
We are kicking off KCRW’s World Festival at the Hollywood Bowl this Sunday with a show featuring Afrobeat superstar Femi Kuti, breakout star Santigold and the soulful sounds of Raphael Saadiq. It’s an incredible lineup and the show starts at 7pm, with KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad as host.
If you're still up for a party after the Bowl, head over to the Vanguard in Hollywood for a special Afro Funke event with KCRW's own Jeremy Sole. It's from 10pm to 4am. Info: www.afrofunke.com

Very exciting news -- KCRW DJ Liza Richardson's remix of Femi Kuti's song "Eh Oh" will be included in tomorrow night's episode of CSI: NY!
It's part of a five-song remix CD called Femi Kuti vs. KCRW Soundclash that we put together with Mercer Street/Downtown Records and offered as a special bonus during our pledge drive. Some copies are still available as a member premium.
It just so happens that the music supervisor who chose the track for CSI is a former KCRW volunteer! Rudy Chung previously worked on Anne Litt's show.
Liza is a music supervisor herself so this extra special fun for her. She will be working on the new "Melrose Place" series and is currently choosing music for the TV show "Lie to Me." She has also been working on "In the Motherhood," which debuts on Thursday.

The reigning king of Afrobeat Femi Kuti gets the remix treatment from KCRW DJs, including new Music Director Jason Bentley, as part of a unique creative collaboration with Mercer Street / Downtown Records. The five-song EP will be available during KCRW’s winter pledge drive January 30 through February 9 as a gift with a donation of $100 or more.
KCRW has been playing music by Femi, and his father Fela Kuti, since the station launched it’s eclectic music format over 30 years ago. The Femi Kuti vs. KCRW Soundclash Remix Project came about when Mercer Street / Downtown Records’ Michael Pontecorvo asked Jason to remix a track off “Day by Day,” Femi’s first studio album in seven years and the first release on Downtown Records newly launched imprint Mercer Street Records. Jason suggested turning it into a KCRW Soundclash and inviting a handful of other DJs to remix songs as well. He approached the first Afrobeat fans that came to mind -- Garth Trinidad, Raul Campos, Liza Richardson, and Jeremy Sole.
"Everybody's remix is representative of their personal take on Afrobeat and all of them are compelling and unique. From my edgy dancefloor version to Garth's dubbed out sketch, Raul's poolside House groove and Jeremy's purist Afrobeat offering. The one that I am most proud of is Liza's remix. It's her first remix and she hit it out of the park," said Bentley.
