K’Naan has once of the most interesting stories I’ve
heard in a long time. He’s originally from Somalia and comes from a family of poets and singers. Poetry is so valued
in Somalia
– and his grandfather was so influential – that they lowered the
flag of the country for three days when he passed in away. K’Naan is a
thoughtful rapper whose music is rooted in traditional African melodies and
classic hip-hop tradition. He tells Jason that he breaks down his life in terms
of times of peace and times of war and has tried to transform the pain of tough
times into things people sing about. With an invitation from the Marley family,
he recorded his album in Kingston,
with various appearances from members of Bob’s musical and personal life
stopping in throughout the process. “Wavin’ Flag” is the
culmination of all his many talents in one song.

Street artist Shepard Fairey appeared on MBE for a Guest DJ set and an interview! He delved into his history and rise in the art world, his work for the Obama campaign, his process – as both an artist and a DJ – and shed some light on some recent legal entanglements that have made news headlines. He played some great songs (kicking it off with “Police On My Back,” a nod to his arrest in Boston earlier this year) and provided some incredible insight into his work. This is a MUST listen. If you missed it, find it in the archives here. There is also a transcript available.
One of my favorite parts:
“I became addicted to DJing because it has the same rewarding problem-solving aspects as design and, in fact, its even more fun because your listening to great stuff as you're figuring out how to put it together in a way that works -- that’s both sharing something that people may know, but also combining it in a new way that they're not expecting, so it's that double-up punch.”

Fans of “The Wire” should definitely check this one out!
George Pelecanos was a writer and producer on the Emmy Award-winning TV series and he’s also penned a slew of best selling crime novels. He digs into serious subject matter for his work, however his musical inspirations range from a carefree single from the ‘70s to the soundtrack for an epic spaghetti Western. George also includes an anthem from “the best rock band in America” and a politically conscious artist he calls his hero. Check out his Guest DJ set here

Regina Spektor is one of very few artists that I would call truly unique. And I say that after seeing Grace Jones perform at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday! (which was amazing and better than any review I’ve read or could hope to write). What makes Regina so special is that she doesn’t need wild costuming or dramatic stage shows -- she does it all from behind a piano, with lyrics that send your mind spinning. Today on MBE, Regina had a small string section and a drummer to help bring tracks off her new album to life, including “Laughing With,” “The Calculation,” and “Folding Chair.”
She talked to Jason about putting the CD together, comparing songs to short stories – how she writes them on her own and then positions them into a good collection.
(sorry, there’s no video – it was the artist’s request)

Morphine is re-issuing their 3rd album "YES" on vinyl this week. The album, originally released in 1995, features a KCRW first – it is the only occasion where a live track from one of our studio sessions (“I Had My Chance”) ended up on an original studio album. Many artists put out KCRW live tracks as singles, album bonus tracks or part of box sets but this was part of the original album line up, sandwiched between the buzzing pop single “Super Sex” and “The Jury.”
