Ever since I saw Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros at SXSW, I was waiting for the moment they would appear on MBE. It was inevitable. The band is larger than life and their music is so full of joy, it’s impossible not to get caught up in it. The band made their worldwide radio debut on KCRW this morning, with guest host Anne Litt, but I have a feeling the rest of the world will know about them sooner rather than later. The band formed about two years ago and has played out only occasionally, waiting for the right time to make a splash. The 11-piece band (sometimes more) is led by Alex Ebert, singer for another standout local band Ima Robot. After Ima Robot was dropped from a major label, Alex was finally able to return to songwriting without having to live up to anyone’s expectations and Edward Sharpe was born. The set was solid throughout but “Janglin,” “40 Daydream,” and “Carries On” are all spectacular live.
Check this out and keep an eye out for them on tour this summer

Rather than collecting photos, memorabilia and movie posters, Academy Award-winning Director Sam Mendes says his life has been “lived out in songs” and he shares some of his personal favorites as part of his Guest DJ set. He includes the tune his father sang to him at bedtime, as well as the track that was playing while his first child was born. He also shares a revelation he had while seeing a famously moody artist who refuses to cater to his audience. Check out the newest set in the Guest DJ Project HERE.
Sam’s latest movie is Away We Go.

Chris Douridas was today’s guest host for Morning Becomes Eclectic (his old post) and brought in UK rocker Carina Round for a live set. She played songs off her latest EP, Things You Should Know as well as a spectacular cover of Cat Stevens’ “The Wind.”

I first heard about Passion Pit last year during the CMJ music conference in NYC. They, alongside School of Seven Bells, were by far the most talked about bands. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that I got a copy of their album and I haven’t stopped playing it since! “The Reeling” has been a huge hit at the station and if you enjoy music fueled by many, many keyboards and high-pitched vocals, I suggest you check this out.

KCRW will feature a rare interview with legendary musician Sly Stone on Memorial Day, May 25 at 11am PST, conducted by Chris Douridas. The elusive musician talks about his personal history and career while Chris spins classic hits from his band Sly and the Family Stone, as well as a special unreleased track– a song by his family’s gospel band, The Stewart Four.
Chris will be a guest host on Morning Becomes Eclectic, filling in for Music Director Jason Bentley, on May 25 and 26, 2009. He will host a live performance with UK rocker Carina Round on Tuesday, May 26 while DJ Anne Litt hosts the worldwide radio debut of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros on Thursday, May 28.

A few KCRW DJs have events around town this weekend. On Saturday, May 23 Raul Campos spins poolside at the Custom Hotel at 1pm on a bill including Mark Farina. On Sunday, May 24 Garth Trinidad hosts a “World War Free” event at Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Also on Sunday, Chris Douridas will be spinning at a pool party hosted by the Ace Hotel and Swim Club in Palm Springs from 2 to 7pm.

Sara Watkins spent over 18 years as a member of the band Nickelcreek and made her solo debut on Morning Becomes Eclectic today. Not many people get to boast of having a member of Led Zeppelin produce their debut. Apparently, John Paul Jones plays the mandolin and they met at a series of bluegrass and folk festivals until he warned that he would never speak to her again if she didn't let him produce her solo album. She complimented his abilities behind the board, calling him an "invisible producer" who really let the band sort things out amongst themselves. Her time at LA venue Largo -- playing a regular residency as part of the Watkins Family Hour -- was also celebrated on her new album, which includes a cover of another Largo regular, David Garza.
Sara firmly told Jason there are no plans in store for a Nickelcreek reunion. She said the band really felt like they accomplished what they set out to do.
