Tom Schnabel walked out of the studio after recording this session and looked like he was on cloud nine. He told me it was just a casual session with a few of the greatest jazz players ever. Sounds pretty good to me!
From Tom:
“Alan Broadbent is one of jazz’ greatest players and arrangers, while Putter Smith has played with everybody from Marlene Dietrich to Thelonious Monk. Together they have radar ears and a taste for fun. It was a pleasurable, casual session which I’m delighted to share with listeners.”
Check it out live at 2pm PST on SUNDAY…it will be archived here after it airs.

I remember my dad telling me when I was growing up about this group of songwriters in Brooklyn who wrote almost all the hits songs of an era, using one of my favorites – Little Eva’s version of “The Loco-Motion” – as an example. Carole King was, of course, one of those writers and seeing her in the studio today was an incredible experience.
She began the session with the song that really kicked off her writing career, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” which was a hit for The Shirelles. Afterwards, she chatted with Chris about everything that led up to it – not surprisingly, she tells great stories.
Chris threw in a few early demos of songs that became huge hits for others and she talked about how James Taylor was the one who pushed her forward to perform her own songs.
Carole tells Chris she loves working on “assignment” but how a song like “You Got a Friend” just came to her. DEFINITELY tune in for this set – it’s something very special or check out the archived version here after it airs on Saturday at 2pm PST.

As soon as Nic heard “That’s Not My Name,” he was hooked. That catchy ditty caught on with listeners as well – it seemed like every time he played this band the phone rang…and his 5-year-old twins loved it too, which is always a good sign.
We knew we had to have them in as soon as they made their way overseas. The Ting Tings finally stopped by a few weeks ago during their first ever jaunt through the U.S. They taped a set here at our studio before performing their first gig in the city for a buzzing audience of music industry folks that included Rick Rubin.
The band is really new and singer Katie White attributes the uniqueness of their songs to her not really knowing how to play guitar. The Ting Tings, with Jules De Martino on percussion, pack a punch as a duo and their live performance kept me bouncing. Katie is really fierce on stage, has great style and is very nice in person – a good combination for sure.
“Great DJ” kicks off the set and happens to be my favorite one. "Shut Up and Let Me Go" is also a lot of fun.
Catch these guys while you can, we all think they are going to be really big.

Allison Krauss / Robert Plant

KT Tunstall recorded an excellent set for us a few weeks ago with just her, a guitar, and two back up singers (love the harmonies!). Just hours after the Village recording, I read that she was performing a quick set for striking writers. While there were reports that a lot of artists were doing performances as publicity ploys, I truly do not believe this was the case with KT, who appears to me to be someone who has no trouble speaking her mind and plays by her own rules.
She’s got a great vibe about her and chatted happily with Nic. She played hits off her last album and some fun tracks from her new one. Definitely worth a listen/watch!

If you're like me, you have a bit of Led Zep fever right now. I am terribly jealous of everyone who saw Led Zeppelin's reunion show earlier this week (including my friend and Yahoo! music scribe Lyndsey Parker: REVIEW) SO, as a weekend treat, I thought I would dig into our archives and lead you to a performance Robert Plant did on our airwaves a few years ago. There is no video but his voice is in top form. Enjoy and have a good weekend!
