“The Dude” is our Guest DJ
I saw The Big Lebowski the day it opened on 4/20/1998. I didn’t totally get it (for a variety of reasons) but I still enjoyed it. But over the last 10 years, it’s become one of my favorite movies – I’ve watched it so many times I’ve lost count, its the most commonly quoted among my friends AND a “cult” I am proud to be a part of. I even went to one of the LA “Lebowski Fests.” (though I didn’t dress in costume, one of my friends dressed up as an ATM Machine. If you know the movie, you’ll get the joke)
And that’s the first time I met Jeff Dowd. Jeff was the Coen Brothers’ inspiration for the main character “The Dude.” He is definitely an iconic figure in his own right. He is a political activist (best known as a member of the "Seattle Seven," who went to jail for contempt of court following a violent protest against the Vietnam war) and a movie producer, so it’s not surprising his Guest DJ set included dramatic stories and song choices that reflect the state of the world. He also showed his “tender” side. Check it out

p.s.: there was a great article in Rolling Stone recently with some spot-on reflections on why the movie means so much to so many people. Here is the link.
