L.A. is Mars – Biirdie on MBE!

What a great way to kick off 2008! Biirdie was our first live band of the year and their music was beautiful with lots of layers and harmonies – a breath of fresh air given the current, post-holiday live music rut in LA.

As strange as it may sound, there is an incredible alt-country scene here in Los Angeles. I was lucky enough to be a part of it years ago, working with Polly Parsons (daughter of Gram) who brought a bunch of bands together for a tribute concert to her dad. Biirdie takes off down a similar but different road, with really strong original songs and an AWESOME cover of “Who Were You Thinking of” (originally by the Texas Tornadoes).

The second set highlight was “I'm Gonna Tell You Something” it was really stunning listening to it build with slight psychedelic flourishes courtesy of Kala Savage on synth. Speaking of Kala, her extremely proud brother (Fred Savage, recognize the name?) had a smile so wide it filled the room – apparently recognition for this Glendale group is long overdue and he was really happy to witness it. The final tune, “LA is Mars” is one to add to any collection of songs about the city.
