Cold War Kids on MBE
Local breakout band Cold War Kids returned to MBE this morning with songs from their new release “Loyalty to Loyalty.” Nathan Willett’s unique storytelling is as poignant as ever and their intensity cannot be beat – they seem to attack their instruments more than play them at times. It was such a joy to see them again with a new batch of songs (and new facial hair – bassist and visual artist Matt Maust was sporting a serious beard!)
The first single – “Something is Not Right With Me” –
echoes the passionate yelps and thumping beats of songs off their first album. Politics
and the current state of affairs is at the forefront including “Welcome
to the Occupation,” which was inspired by Nathan and Jonnie Russell’s
experience as public school teachers (and the failure of the system they were
working in).
If you’re curious about the album title, Nathan tells Nic a great story about how it came about in the interview. Some really insightful stuff about our desire to be individuals vs. the importance of bonding together and being part of a community. I’ve always loved how smart this band is and they proved it once again.
