Black Kids Extend the Weekend w/ a Party on MBE
I got to extend my weekend until about noon today thanks to the party the Black Kids put on at the Village this morning. When I first walked in they looked pretty sleepy but as soon as they started playing, they perked up into the high-energy band I had hoped to see.
They were the buzz of last year’s CMJ conference in October. I missed them -- their show had a line around the block by the time I found out about it -- but when I got home, I checked out their MySpace page where they had four songs available for download. I put them on a CD for Nic and walked it right into the studio. “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You” got a lot of MBE play (before any official release) and by the time their full length “Partie Traumatic” came out, we were already fans. The band also comes from my home state (Florida) and sadly there aren’t a ton of great bands from the region (aside from Tom Petty and Iron & Wine). The band was super duper friendly and very laid back. Not at all pretentious, despite all the incredible attention they have gotten in a short amount of time.
Only check out this set if you have room for dancing and/or toe tapping
